Few details say as much about a watch’s age as its luminous material. It reveals the decade, explains the colour of the patina, shapes collector value — and in its first generation really was radioactive. Once you know the three eras and their dial codes, you read a dial like an identity document.
Three eras of luminous material
Radium: until around 1960
The first luminous compound was self-glowing in the literal sense: radium salts excited a phosphor continuously, with no external light. It worked for decades and cost the health of many of the women who painted the numerals by brush, pointing the tip with their lips as they went. The scandal around those workers led to occupational safety laws that reached far beyond the watch industry. From the 1960s onwards radium disappeared from production.
Tritium: roughly 1960 to 1998
Tritium replaced radium: also radioactive, but with far weaker radiation that does not pass through the crystal. You spot it by the familiar dial abbreviations. The drawback shows only with the years: the half-life is a little over twelve years, which is why tritium watches from the 1970s barely glow at all today. What remains is the colour — that creamy, honeyed ageing collectors call patina and prize.
Super-LumiNova: from the mid-1990s
Today’s luminous material is not radioactive at all but photoluminescent: it stores light and releases it again. It therefore has to be “charged” and fades over the course of a night — in exchange it barely ages and is entirely harmless. Modern variants are deliberately tinted cream to imitate the look of aged tritium dials. When you see “vintage patina” on a brand-new watch, that is usually what you are looking at.
Reading the codes on the dial
- “T SWISS T” or “T SWISS MADE T” at the bottom edge of the dial: tritium. Typical of the 1960s to the 1990s.
- “SWISS - T < 25”: tritium as well, with a note that activity lies below a set limit.
- “SWISS” alone with no addition: often a transitional phase — either early dials or the radium era, depending on the age of the watch.
- “L SWISS MADE L” or “SWISS MADE” with an added letter: Luminova or Super-LumiNova, so mid-1990s onwards.
- No abbreviation at all on a clearly pre-war looking dial: radium is likely.
Careful with the reverse inference: a dial reading “T SWISS T” only proves that this dial dates from the tritium era — not that it belongs to this watch. That is precisely why the codes are also an authenticity marker: if the code does not match the reference’s production period, the dial has been swapped or relumed.
How risky is a radium watch really?
Wearing a sealed radium watch is generally regarded as unproblematic — the radiation is weak and largely retained by case and crystal. It becomes critical when the substance is released: as dust inside an opened case, when brittle luminous material flakes off, or when a dial is worked on. Ingested or inhaled dust is the actual risk, not the watch on the wrist.
- Do not open radium watches yourself — and never blow on, brush or wipe an exposed dial.
- Do not store large numbers of them permanently in the bedroom or right beside your pillow.
- Tell the watchmaker beforehand that the watch is radium. Specialist workshops have their own procedures.
- Loose luminous material inside the case is a reason to leave the watch closed and seek advice.
- A Geiger counter is not required for assessment, but many collectors use one to tell radium from tritium beyond doubt.
Why tritium watches no longer glow
The phosphor itself tires, and the tritium decays: after a little over twelve years half is gone, after twenty-five years a quarter remains. A watch from the 1980s therefore glows faintly at best. That is neither a defect nor a reason to relume — quite the opposite: originally aged luminous material is worth considerably more to collectors than a fresh application, which destroys the dial’s historical value.
The exception: tritium gas tubes
Some tool watches still use tiny glass tubes filled with tritium gas. They glow continuously without charging, fading gradually over many years. You recognise them by the perfectly even, slightly raised bars that still glow uniformly after hours in complete darkness — unlike Super-LumiNova, which starts bright after charging and then drops off.
